A short history without boring you to death: On February 27th, 1996 the first in a long series of Pokemon games came out for the Nintendo Game boy, following the games the Pokemon trading cards were released in 1999 when I was 20 years old. The trading cards became insanely popular among teens especially, but who knew they were still so popular in 2016?!?!?… I sure didn’t until recently before the release of Pokemon Go, all 5 of my best friends kids and 3 of my brother’s kids were showing off their Pokemon cards and collections to me. Needless to say I was surprised watching them wheel and deal their cards and play a game I thought was dead…… Then….. Pokemon Go came out.

As marketing experts, we are always looking for new creative ways to help our clients achieve their maximum marketing potential. Every day we are exploring the world of marketing to find the BEST channels for client growth and conversion. On July 6th a mobile game changer (pun intended) was released that has effectively changed the way we will look at marketing forever. We will call it location-based gaming — sure it has been around a while via games such as Ingress, Geocaching, and a few others but now the “game” has truly changed.
The new IOS and Android game is called Pokemon Go, and you have probably heard of it if you are reading this article. Released just 1 week ago today (today is July 13, 2016 — I totally know you were wondering what day it is) and Pokemon Go has already become the most popular mobile game of ALL TIME! It is on a clear path to exceed all other mobile applications including Snapchat, Google Maps and Twitter. I personally have been playing it for a few days now, almost continuously in order to understand the game mechanics and its potential marketing uses, oh yeah and because it is addictively fun. Why don’t we save the fun talk for later and focus on understanding how location-based gaming will change the way you do and market your business forever with Pokemon Go and any other location-based games that may come in the future.
